Chapter 4

“Seigneur, bro!” Val had bolted from his chair at the woman’s scream. He eyed his brother still lounging back with a perplexed expression on his face, while Sasha nervously hopped on his paws. “A troll?”

A big part of the patrons had rushed outside leaving the place more than half-empty.

“Sounds like they’re taking care of it.” Mag sampled a sip of his beer before getting on his feet.

“Maisie’s going to trash that scum,” the middle-aged man at the counter told the barman.

“For sure, Doyle. She will.”

Maisie? The girl from the craft shop had barreled outside with her girlfriends and everyone else. Surely, they got this wrong. The town couldn’t be relying on that young woman to get rid of an actual troll.

“Mag.” Val turned to his brother with urgency. “We’ve got to help.”

“I certainly want to see this.” Mag’s eyes crinkled with interest. “I’m curious to see what that little witch is going to do against a troll.”

“She’s just a child,” Val protested. Worry for the young woman suddenly grew within him.

“One, she’s not a child,” Mag countered. “And two, she’s got powers, I told you.”

“It’s a test,” one of the waitresses said to them as she walked past to look out the window. “The Beaudry Elder wants Maisie Thibodeau to use her powers in front of everyone.”

“Why on earth would they want that?” Val mumbled. This place was insane.

That poor young witch. His own powers twitched as a slew of protective urges rose inside him. He had to help her.

“Come on, Mag.” Val snapped his fingers at Sasha and, with his dog at his heels, he followed everyone exiting the bar into the summer air, cheering the young woman on.

Mag was right behind him. They soon found themself in the main square. It appeared as if half of Berwick Hollow was there in a mix of local witches and humans, along with supernaturals here for the parley.

The small gas station stood between two town shops but, unlike their tidy storefronts, the scene there was a complete mess. The small parking lot was littered with spilled washer fluid and shattered glass from the broken window of the convenience store. The sounds of destruction echoed from somewhere inside and a magazine rack suddenly flew out of the front door, landing on the air pump by the curb.

The young witch stood at the front of the crowd alongside the similarly young dark-haired woman who had been sitting with her in the bar. They were both facing the station with grim resolution.

“Who’s this with the Thibodeau girl?” Val leaned into the man called Doyle who had walked along with them.

“That’s her cousin Ava Beaudry. Those two have been tight since birth. Equally powerful,” the man said, his eyes on the brightly lit station. “Ava shouldn’t be there. This is Maisie’s test. The girl can hold her own. She’s as talented as her grandmother.”

“The high priestess?” Mag asked.

Val raised a surprised eye to his brother. “You never said she was the high priestess’ granddaughter.”

“Look!” someone behind them shouted before Mag could explain himself further.
